Structure of insect neurons
back
Figure
8 shows examples of insect brain neurons composing a neural
circuit. Structurally, neurons have a more or less globular cell
body (soma) of about 10microns in diameter (size is variable
depending on cell type). In general, a single neurite emerges from
the cell body and divides into two or more branches of more or less
complex shape. Most cells have a clear polarity in that the primary
neurite divides into an axonal and a dendritic branch. The axon
conveys information to other neurons connected to it via synapses.
