Structure of insect neurons

  Figure 8 shows examples of insect brain neurons composing a neural circuit. Structurally, neurons have a more or less globular cell body (soma) of about 10microns in diameter (size is variable depending on cell type). In general, a single neurite emerges from the cell body and divides into two or more branches of more or less complex shape. Most cells have a clear polarity in that the primary neurite divides into an axonal and a dendritic branch. The axon conveys information to other neurons connected to it via synapses.
